Laxmikant-Pyarelal

YEAR-WISE COMPARISON OF LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL MUSIC WITH OTHER CONTEMPORARY MUSIC DIRECTORS

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have dominated the hindi film music. LP have composed over 2800 songs, or even more, according to change of time and the situation demands, for nearly 500 films, a record, in the span of 35 years.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal songs are available for all the Indian festivals, including Eid, Easter and Christmas. Laxmikant-Pyarelal songs are for all generations. Laxmikant-Pyarelal songs are available for any situations.

If any Radio station starts broadcasting Laxmikant-Pyarelal songs 24 hours X 7 days, none of the songs will be repeated. Such an enormous quantity of popular songs with quality, variety and melody, as well.

PHILOSOPHY OF SONG COMPOSITION

One must understand how Laxmikant-Pyarelal used to compose the songs. Most of the Music directors pairs will compose the song separately / individually, under the respective banner like wise, Shankar-Jaikishan or Kalyanji-Anandji…

Interestingly, Laxmikant was the follower of Jaikishan style, not only in music but also in following Jaikishan’s wearing of wrist watch, cloth etc. Whereas Pyarelal was a follower of Shankar style of music.

Both Laxmikant and Pyarelal were complete musicians. Both of them knew the art of film song compositions as well as the orchestra arrangements. Both of them were capable of extracting the “best” from the singers as well as from the musicians.

In particular Pyarelalji, other than his proficiency in conducting the orchestra, he was an adroit in eliciting impishly rendering from the singers. For example, Lata Mangeshkar’s solo songs, ‘नींद निगाहों से खो जातीहै मुहोब्बत मुहोब्बत (Lootera 1965). The मुहोब्बत word was repeatedly rendered 58 times, each time in different way. बिंदिया चमकेगी sssss (Do Raaste, 1969), giving the stress on चमकेगी. चलो sss सजना (Mere Hamdam Mere Dost, 1968), rendering the word चलो sss, romantically. मैं तेरे इश्क़ मैं मर न जाऊं ssss कभी and many more.

The act of song compositions of Laxmikant-Pyarelal, still remains a secret. No one could guess which is Laxmikant composition or which is Pyarelal composition. It was a complete team work.

All songs have an “LP” stamp. No THIRD person was involved.

It is remarkable achievement for the new comer music directors, Laxmikant-Pyarelal to achieve TOP spot in the span of over three years.

When the duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal started with “Parasmani” music in 1963, many big names like Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan, Roshan, O P Nayyar, S D Burman, Madan Mohan, Ravi, Chitragupt, Hemant Kumar, etc were established music directors.

But Laxmikant-Pyarelal took on all the might of Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan O P Nayyar, Roshan, Madan Mohan etc. The duo, Laxmikant-Pyarelal ruled the later half of 60s. Later maintained it, till the end of the century. It was the stunning ‘blow’ to all old, established music directors.

Listen to what Ameen Sayani / C. Ramchandra had predicted about the new, talented, proficient star music directors, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, in the following video clip.

It was an LP “wave”. “Weekly Binaca Geet Mala” was 70% flooded with LP songs…It was a CLEAN SWEEP..

I don’t think any of the music directors have given so many hits and quality songs in a particular year. .

Truly speaking 1967 belongs to Laxmikant-Pyarelal, they not only confirmed the Number One position in Hindi Film Music, but also consolidated it with a series of hits by one after another with variety.

“FARZ” was the most successful golden jubilee hit movie which made Jeetendra a STAR.

After this victorious feat, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and success went together without a break or loss of continuity.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal won their second filmfare award for “MILAN”, beating Kalyanji-Anandji for “Upkar” and Ravi for “Humraz”.

Now this was the time that Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music became an essential component of every successful film. Big banners, prominent producers and directors wanted LP to score them for their respective films.

The biggest news in the Hindi Film Music for this year, were

1) Laxmikant-Pyarelal refusing to Producer Premji’s big budget and prestigious movie “MEERA” ( earlier LP had worked with Premji for the movies like “Mastana”, “Dushman”, “Dost” and “Majboor” all were musically hit). Firstly it was Lata Mangeshkar who refused to sing the songs for “Meera”, as she had sung enough songs/bhajans on Meera. Finally the music was scored by Sitar Maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar and all the songs were sung by Vani Jairam.

2) Laxmikant-Pyarelal also refused to score the music for H.S Rawal’s big budget movie “Laila Majanu”. Earlier LP/HS Rawal had worked for “Mehaboob Ki Mehandi”, a super musical hit with some immortal songs. LP said they are very busy for other big projects and convinced H S Rawal to go ahead with Madanmohan with whom  Pyarelal had worked as an assistant for many years. Moreover Madanmohan was less busy on those days. It is unfortunate that Madanmohan died halfway through the film. Later it was Jaidev who completed the remaining job for the film.

This year too Laxmikant-Pyarelal continued to work with Mohammad Rafi, when other contemporary music directors have already forgotten him. LP gave some good songs for Rafi, in spite of Kishore Kumar’s domination in the male singing.

The best award for the music unanimously went to Khaiyyam, his first big award, for his excellent work in ”Kabhi Kabhi”. Beating R D Burman’s “Mehbooba”, Kalyanji-Anandji’s “Bairaag”, Ravindra Jain’s “Chit Chor” and Madanmohan’s “Mousam”.

This year’s national award for the best singer went to Sulakshna Pandit for her song Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hai Kirana Dhoondta Hai Tu Kiska Sahara..(also one of my favorite songs) for the film “Sankalp”. This film too has music by Khaiyyam.

This year witnessed the death of great singer Mukesh .

After failing miserably on the acting part Subhash Ghai emerged as a director. “Kalicharan” became the film.

Though R D Burman, Rajesh Roshan ( a one time assistant to Laxmikant-Pyarelal) and Khaiyyam did produce some good melodies. The songs of ”Karz”, ”Asha” and “Dostana” dominate the show for LP..

Once again it was a clean sweep by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This year too no competition for LP.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal boldly introduced today’s sensational singer Sukhwinder Singh. Actually late Laxmikant herd young Sukhwinder Sing singing the song Sola Baras Ki Bali Umar Ko Salam in one of the functions in Punjab

and immediately called for recording the songs of “Naam” and “Karma”. Today he is right on top of his profession.

LP were desperately looking for the substitute of Mohammad Rafi. This year they also introduced Mohammad Aziz.

Other than Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle..LP continued trying new talented female singers Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavitha Krishmurthy and S. Janki

and composed some popular and hit songs.

Unfortunately this year filmfare did not announce any award. But it was sure Laxmikant-Pyarelal could have won the award either for ”Naam”, “Karma” or “Nagina”..There were no other major musical hits from any of the music directors in the year 1986.

With the songs of LP’s “Naam”, “Nagina” and “Karma” released in late 1986, again Laxmikant-Pyarelal dominates the show for the year 1987. Laxmikant-Pyarelal introduced new singers. This time they introduced female singer Alisha Chinoy for the song Kate Nahin Katate ..I Love You…

LP also gave some good songs to the other leading female singers like Alka Yagnik, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal. On the male singers they have to contend with Kishore Kumar and also gave some good melodies to Mohammad Aziz, Suresh Wadkar, Manahar, Shabbir Kumar etc.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal:- Mr. India, Kudarat Ka Kanoon, Aulad, Mard Ki Zaban, Sindoor, Loha, Sansaar, Nazarana.

This year too Filmfare did not announce any award and hence once again Laxmikant-Pyarelal lost the opportunity to win the best music award, unanimously, for the film ”MR INDIA”

On a very sad note music lover lost Kishore Kumar on 13th October, 1987. An end of an ERA.

LP v/s Other Musical Hits for the Year 1989

This year LP gave the music for as many as 15 films and at the same time they crossed the 400 number. Subhash Ghai’s ”Ram Lakhan” was Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s 400th film.

Anand Milind:- Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka

Anu Malik:- Toofan

Shiv-Hari:- Chandani

Ram-Laxman:- Maine

Pyar Kiya..

Once again Laxmikant-Pyarelal continues to top the number of hits in this year too. This year KA (Tridev) , Ram Laxman (Maine Pyar Kiya), and Shiv-Hari (Chandani) gave some challenges to LP.

It is interesting to note that LP composed some good / popular / hit music by using the new names like, Mohammad Aziz, Alka Yagnik, Kavitha Krishnmurthy, Manahar Udhas, Amit Kumar. They also gave few songs to Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Mahendra Kapoor.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal:- Ram Lakhan, Batwara, Santosh, Chalbaaz, Nigahen, Bhrashtachaar, Bade Ghar Ki Beti etc.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s ”RAM LAKHAN”, Kalyanaji-Anandji’s “Tridev”, Shiv-Hari’s “Chandani” and Ram Laxman’s “Maine Pyar Kiya” were the strong contenders for the best music award. Jury decides not to give it to LP’s “Ram Lakhan” but to give it to Ram Laxman’s “Maine Pyar Kiya”…

LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL   1990

LP v/s Other Prominent Musical Hits of the year 1990..

This year LP gave the music for as many as 20 films.

Bappi Lahiri:- Aaj Ka Arjun, Ghar Ka Chirag,

Rajesh Roshan:- Kishan Kanhaiyya,

Anand Milind:- Aayi Milan Ki Raat, Dil, Baaghi.

Anu Malik:- Tum Mere Ho

Ved Pal:- Sauntan Ki Beti

Nadeem-Shravan:- Aashiqui

Laxmikant-Pyarelal:- Izzatdaar, Jamai Raja, Pati Patni Aur Tawayaf, Jeevan Ek Sangharsh, Khilaaf, Hatimtai, Agneepath, Sheshnaag etc..

This year although LP gave maximum films and tried number of new singers, also tried new combinations for duet..but ..but for the first time in last 28 years LP’s songs were not appearing in the top first five. The only saving grace was the song from “Pati Patni Aur Tawaif”..Kehna Na Tum Kisi Se ( 8th position in Binaca Geet Mala) was a hit but not to the reputation of LP.

This year there was also a rift between Laxmikant and Pyarelal both of them almost decided to separate. For two weeks no talk, no recording of the songs of LP..an unusual thing….Lata Mangeshkar, Music director Naushad, Producer-Director Subhash Ghai took the initiative and resolved the rift between Laxmikant and Pyarelal. Till date no one knows what had happened to the long lasting friendship of L and P.It is still a secret . But it has certainly affected them heavily.

This year’s musical show was stolen by Nadeem-Shravan for their super duper music in ”Aashiqui”…the songs were like a storm this year. Anand-Milind also gave some excellent music in ”Dil”. It was one of the rare year in which Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s name did not appear in the nominations for the best music award. Nadeem-Shravan, unanimously, won the best music award, for their excellent work in ”Ashiqui”.

BINACA Geetmala Standing in Annual Countdown.. ( 26 songs )

Laxmikant-Pyarelal has some mega hit songs from “Hum”, “Saudagar”. Music of “Prahar” was different from other LP’s musical hits in the nineties. Quantity wise LPs were on top. LP once again bounced back to number 1 position which was affected because of the rift between L and P, last year. At the same time Laxmikant-Pyarelal started regularly using new generations singers like Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. They also boldly introduced Sudesh Bhonsle and Vinay Mandke and Alpana Deshpande. Whenever situation demanded LP also gave some good songs for Lata Mangeshkar.

This year Nadeem-Shravan gave a real challenge to LP. It was a balanced equation of the hit songs from LP and NS. I would say being fresh in Nadeem-Shravan’s music they have an edge this year. Ram-Laxman also gave some good music. Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s “Lekin” music was also a highlight of the year.

Best Music Award..Once again Laxmikant-Pyarelal were nominated for “HUM” and “SAUDAGAR”, Hridaynath Mangaeshkar was nominated for “Lekin”, Nadeem-Shravan were nominated for “Sajan” and “Phool Aur Kaate”. FinallyNadeem-Shravan won their second successive award for the best music for their melodious music in “Sajan”.

  1. A mistake . in 1981 filfare best male playback singer award was given to maitkumar his only award.

spb won national award only but spb singing quality was very poor. even lp had problem with hiim in ek duje ke liye and talked to director.
also rd burmans famous last come back is not listed
lp wre great. they would have acheived more successs if they opted more for kishorekumar than rafi.
the bsest lp songs long lasting are sung by kishore. most people voted for mere mehboob kayaamat hogi as best lp song. listen thye duet pukaro muze phir pukaro by kishore lata. one wonders why lp selected suresh wadkar for the famous duet with lata in nwhich the words appar dhua ba gayi hai khayalo ki mehfil.
the vduet would have been an all time hit with deep voice of kishore and lp opting more for kishore would have raised their popularity as kishore was most popular.
they trid to promote rafi but it failed .pl see that manmphan desais films for maitabh barring aaa more renowned is Ka score for don mukkadar ka sikanadar rr for kuddar yaarana natwarlal , rdbs hits rimzim gire sawaan, jaha teri ye nazar hai, bappi lahiris sharabi.
franly quality wise rd burman and nadeem shravan were best. rd burman is the only compser after the stawarts whose name can be listed with stalwarts. lp and ka produced good some times greater songs than rdb but variety the classs was with rdb. ka produced some outstanding melodies more oustanding than rdb lp for eg safar mera jeevan kkora kagaz o sathi re khaike pan banaraswala neele neele yari hai iman mera.
rdbs trum card was kishore . he used it lesser in 80s and gave chance tto amitkumar suresh wadkar. but so he failed his successful scores commerically when he used kishore inn eigthies or kumar sany exactly in tone of kishore. Amitkuar failed to delivveredas he exactly rever4sed . he emulated kishore in lighter numbers sometime better than kishore as in laila o laila or bato bato me but mostly poorer and tried to mix rafi style with kishore in softer serious songs. Peolle distictly prefereed romatic deliverirs of kishore ssad songs of kishore to rafi. on lighter songs both were equal.
lp should have used kishore in suhaag . nowdays people remeber my name is anthony more than parda haai parda.

premrog songs woulld have suited kisore more. lp rafi was a dull combination barring parda hai mai jat yemla aaj mausam. rafi was great iwiith madan mohan sd burna shankaer jaikishan op nayyyar and rd burman . rafi was poor with lp combinatin.

sargam has the dominance of lata. Alos had they used kishore in place of rafi music would have nbeen mmore hit as these type of songs are not many in kishores voice and it would have given a rare touch adding to popularity

above all a great site and great compilation. congrats
